UNPLUG / UNSCREW AND POUR METHODS The refilling of most toner cartridges is very easy. If the cartridge has a visible plug (see picture top right) this needs to be gently prised out with a screwdriver and the toner powder poured into the cartridge. After replacing the plug gently shake the cartridge from side to side to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge, the instructions below explain how to do it.
TO AVOID ANY ACCIDENTAL SPILLS RESIST THE TEMPTATION TO SQUEEZE THE BOTTLE during the refilling procedure, whilst toner refilling is generally considered harmless you can make an awful mess if you spill the powder, be sure to cover your work area with newspaper and keep a soft brush or old cloth ready just in case.
UNPLUG and POUR – (for cartridges with an obvious refill plug) E.G. ML-4500 / ML-1210 / ML-1510 / ML-1710 / ML-1750 etc, some Lexmark, Epson EPL and Brother printers (and many more).
REFILL PLUG Remove toner-sealing plug, the round cap on the side of the cartridge (should look similar to the picture on the left) using a flat blade screwdriver or a pair of pliers.
Hold the cartridge at a 45-degree angle and Insert the nozzle fully into the cartridge hole, then gently tap the bottle. If the toner stops flowing, remove the bottle, replace the bottle lid and give it another shake. This will allow the toner to flow again then continue pouring. Always leave a little space in the toner cartridge never overfill (we recommend you use just half of the toner per refill just to be safe).
Replace toner sealing-plug – DONE!
UNSCREW and POUR – (for cartridges with no plug)E.G. ML1520 / SCX-4100 etc Undo the cartridge screws, there are typically five screws to remove from the top of the cartridge depending on the make and model of printer usually posi-drive type. The cartridge cover has four retaining clips two on the front and two on back edge of the cartridge that need to be gently prised open using a small blade screwdriver. After removing the cover fill directly into the toner chamber (hopper) then fix the cartridge cover back into place following the reverse of the above procedure.
SAMSUNG PRINTERS E.G ML-1520 etc
Some Samsung starter cartridges are designed to take a vastly reduced amount of toner. Only refill this cartridge to the top of the actuator blade (long plastic bar inside the toner hopper) this will ensure that you do not overfill the cartridge.
UNSCREW / UNPLUG and POUR - SAMSUNG ML-1610 / ML-2010 & DELL 1100 etc
With this new cartridge design undo the two side-plate fixing screws on the right side of the cartridge as you remove it from the printer (posi-drive type see picture on left for exact positions). Gently prise the side plate / cover from the cartridge. You need to prise the cover gently with a wide flat blade screwdriver or wide thin bladed knife, working around the perimeter of the cover until it lifts off completely.
With the side cover removed you will clearly see the traditional Samsung style refill plug, the round shape about the size of a 1 pence coin (see picture top right). Gently prise the plug out of the cartridge using a flat blade screwdriver. We sell replacement plugs so if you damage it, don’t worry too much. Pour approx half of the toner into the toner cartridge DO NOT OVERFILL, hold the cartridge at a 45-degree angle while pouring, gently tap the bottle DO NOT SQUEEZE THE BOTTLE, when finished replace the toner refill plug then replace the side cover before inserting the 2 posi-drive screws. BROTHER PRINTERS Empty all residual (left over) toner out of the cartridge before refilling. Mixing toner batches in this make of printer will impair print quality.
